In a couple of weeks, I am doing a presentation at a ScotlandIS event in Glasgow which will be attended by MSPs, so I thought I would share with you some lessons I have learned from my research in preparing for the presentation. On 2 January, they announced that all systems had been restored roughly five weeks after the attack.

I do not claim to be an expert in the finer processes of a product recall, but some of the issues associated with product recalls are very similar to those associated with crisis management or business continuity. Where we may get involved is the crisis management of the incident. This is just the type of incident, I think, which should be handled by the organisations strategic/crisis team and handled using an incident plan. Where we can add value within this relationship is checking their business continuity plan.

Thomas Cook’s handling of the deaths of Robert and Christianne Shepherd nine years ago is an example of a company which got its crisis management very, very wrong and caused major damage to its brand and reputation. Whenever I am training, I always point out ‘you can outsource the activity but not the risk’.
