In 2003, the National Center for Disaster Preparedness (NCDP), Columbia University, was founded to provide an academically based, interdisciplinary center focused on the capacity to prevent, respond to, and recover from disasters. At the same time, I created the nation’s first pediatric disaster program at my Children’s Hospital.

We don’t see vast amounts of people dying in the streets, hospitals are not overwhelmed, and funeral homes are not over-run. I have been hearing of them working with and paying North Korea to develop them as far back as late 2001. Though it is unlikely the disease will become more deadly. But that is just the beginning.
