These two locks allow cargo traffic totaling 86 million tons annually to travel the Saint Lawrence Seaway, with about 7000 ships passing through. In 1986 Congress approved a new lock, recognizing the need for additional capacity for these large freighters. The new lock is expected to be completed by 2030 (or 2027 by some estimates).
