Although there are four US locks (and one Canadian), only two of the US locks are active. These two locks allow cargo traffic totaling 86 million tons annually to travel the Saint Lawrence Seaway, with about 7000 ships passing through. The new lock is expected to be completed by 2030 (or 2027 by some estimates).
