This act created the National Public Infrastructure Pre-Disaster Mitigation Fund , which enabled states that had received a Presidential disaster declaration in the past seven years to apply for funding to improve their mitigation plans. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act of 1988.

UNDRR has a recurrent initiative for assessing the state of disaster preparedness around the world, and this results in a document, the Global Assessment Report (GAR), which is issued biennially to coincide with the UN's Global Platform on DRR.
