My first lesson is about the number of natural hazards in the area. Between 1995 and 2000, two-thirds of the island’s population was forced to flee to the UK, leaving fewer than 1,200 people on the island, as of 1997. It is lucky that the people are resilient and ‘just get on with it’ after a disaster.
