Disaster Zone Podcast: ‘How the Media Covers Disasters’

You need to look at the media as a partner.

The latest Disaster Zone podcast, “How the Media Covers Disasters,” fits well with the concept that they are part of the emergency management team.

Too many times, emergency managers and others can take a “shields up” approach to dealing with the media. Instead, I think we should see them as part of our larger public team, before, during and after disasters. We both have missions to fulfill and we need to work collaboratively to provide the people we serve with the best products possible.

Here is the podcast description (Note: Be sure and check out the other podcast link below about the media’s use of drones.):

“One of the team members we have in any disaster event is your local media. They may be a newspaper, radio station and in some market’s multiple television stations. In this podcast we explore how the media covers a disaster. The guest, Glenn Farley, a now retired television journalist, covered many disasters when he worked for KING TV You will hear what his approach was to informing the public and bringing science to the table in doing so. Also, the fact that the media has a role in preparing the public for disasters and encouraging individual and family disaster preparedness. For another previously recorded podcast that is related to this one listen to ‘Media’s Use of Drones.’ That topic was only touched on briefly in this podcast.”
Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
