It’s the Climate, Stupid!

Duh, the weather seems funky.

It is April and it is 85 degrees in Philadelphia. There is no hurricane or tropical storm, yet Fort Lauderdale gets 24 inches of rain in a few hours.

Seems normal to me — how about you? Can we say “extremes” seem to be pretty common these days? Climate change impacts are not on the horizon, they are here today. Oh, did I mention a wildfire in New Jersey — in April!

It appears to me that the time to think about carbon reduction is now, and in our business of emergency management, it is climate adaptation time. All our weather hazards are getting worse and we need to be implementing as many mitigation measures as possible.

That includes the physical type in storm drains and not building more properties where they are subject to weather extremes, aka, the coasts or where we are going to run out of water in the West.

It also means our preparedness measures need to ratchet up too. More capability, more staffing, more public outreach so people know how to protect themselves and “ideally avoid” hazards that are climbing the risk profile ladder every day.

What are you planning on doing differently moving forward?
