How to ‘Nudge’ People Along

Indirect ways to move people and organizations.

A former neighbor of mine bought me a copy of the book NUDGE: The Final Edition.

I’m in the process of reading it right now. It’s a terrific book about how to move people to take action, just by how you present information and perhaps options to them.

Think about how we as emergency managers are constantly trying to “nudge” people to assume a position of disaster resilience:

  • Individuals and families towards disaster preparedness
  • Businesses, large and small, towards business continuity
  • Homeowners to think about hazards when buying a new home
  • Getting neighboring jurisdictions to want to cooperate with you
  • The benefits of mutual aid between like organizations
  • Elected officials to increase funding for our discipline
  • The benefits of mutual aid between “unlike” disciplines
  • Doing joint planning

The list can go on and on. When people ask me, “What do you do?” my reply is, “I try to get people and organizations to work together.”

That requires a whole bunch of nudging and I expect to glean a great deal of information and ideas from the book linked above.
