SIA Member Profile: LiveView Technologies

LiveView Technologies Detect. Deter. Defend.

Security Industry Association (SIA) member LiveView Technologies (LVT) is a turnkey security provider who combines proprietary software and hardware for a completely mobile, cloud-based surveillance solution. The company is headquartered in Orem, Utah, and serves clients in big-box retail, construction, law enforcement and infrastructure.

SIA spoke with LVT Chief Business Development Officer David Studdert about LVT and the company’s partnership with SIA.

SIA: Tell us the story of your company.

David Studdert: Ryan Porter and Bob Brenner started LiveView Technologies in 2005 as a way for homeowners, contractors and investors to observe their construction projects. The original idea was to create a reliable means to monitor remote locations. They built the first LVT units in Ryan’s garage, and once contractors started seeing what we could do, they started requesting different capabilities and specifications.

From there, we have continued to grow. What started as a two-man operation in a garage has grown to include more than 300 employees and hundreds of clients. We have our own manufacturing facilities right here in Orem and have employees across the country. Now you can find LVT units in parking lots, at job sites and more. While the bulk of our clients use the units for surveillance and security, the number of use cases continues to astonish me. We have one client who uses the units to protect their commercial gardens from deer, while another uses it to decrease liability at their construction site. Our goal is to provide reliable, automated security no matter what industry our client is in. That is reflected by the fact that we now partner with retailers, government agencies, critical infrastructure operators and more.

What solutions/services does your business offer in the security industry? And what makes your offerings/company unique?

DS: LVT is a blend of hardware and software. We’ve been described as “West Coast Choppers meets Google.” Our mobile security trailers rely heavily on overt and deterrence-based security solutions. They are easy to spot and physically imposing. In fact, when fully deployed the cameras are 22 feet in the air. Furthermore, we purposefully draw more attention to our units by equipping them with strobe lights, flood lights and two-way speakers. The units are completely mobile, using a combination of solar panels, batteries and backup generators, and do not require hookups to power or to the internet. Because of this, they can go literally anywhere – from a remote construction site that has limited infrastructure to a busy retail parking lot where it would take an excessive amount of time and money to build out the necessary hardline infrastructure. Each unit can be customized to the client’s needs and can be installed in 30 minutes or less.

The cameras, lights, sensors, generators, etc., all rely on our proprietary edge controller and the LVT Platform, our video management system (VMS), to function. This is a highly organized, cloud-based solution that ensures secure livestreaming and automatically archives videos without the need for costly IT infrastructure. The LVT Platform is where clients can manipulate their cameras, see live feeds and review past recordings. It is a user-friendly system that allows for easy review and transference of data without the high price tag. Since most security footage does not need to be viewed, the programming in the LVT Platform and the edge controller helps identify threats and alerts the user when something requires their attention. The events that are identified as threats are stored on the cloud, while the 24/7 footage is stored on the unit unless it is requested by the end user. That way broadband is not wasted on transferring unwanted footage but still allows the end user to easily access their data.

What’s something we might not know about your company – or something new you’re doing in security?

DS: One of our newest innovations is the addition of methanol fuel cell generators to our units. Our systems’ primary power source is solar, which can be affected in places like Seattle, Washington, or Syracuse, New York, because of their limited amounts of sunlight during winter months. In fact, even in Miami, Florida, we had problems getting enough solar power because our units were blocked by overpasses, buildings or trees. However, with the addition of the methanol fuel cells, our units can be buried in snow or survive cloudy days with little maintenance. When the unit is low on power, the fuel cell generator kicks on and restores its charge. Furthermore, the only byproduct is water vapor, which makes our system even more environmentally friendly and reduces carbon emissions for our partners coast to coast.

SIA: What does SIA offer that is most important to you/your company? And what do you most hope to get out of your membership?

DS: We love to connect with other industry professionals. Together we can understand the pain points we face, address them and make our communities safer. We look forward to connecting to other SIA members and introducing them to LVT.
