2022 Predictions: How Much Damage Could an IT Outage Do?

January 18, 2022 Leave a comment DRI Admin

The DRI International Future Vision Committee has released its 7th Annual Predictions Report, looking ahead to 2022 and its impact on the resilience community. Download the complete report free from the DRI Library, and read on for a prediction about the cascading effects of a global IT platform crash.

Prediction 7: An extended outage of a global IT platform impacts international e-commerce, stock market trades, and welfare services

As the complexity of global IT networks and platforms grow exponentially, the dependency of business, public services and individuals grows at the same rate. Failure of key parts of this technical infrastructure will disrupt the provision of vital services and threaten the livelihoods of people, organizations, and communities across the world. Effective defenses will be hard to come by. Artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies are particularly vulnerable to criminal infiltration.

High technology components such as micro-chips will be in restricted supply from South East Asia. Countries such as the U.S. and its allies, Russia, China, and India will take steps to protect their critical national industries and their supply chains from such shortages. This could, in itself, add to the risk of technological failure as supplies for maintenance and replacement equipment become unavailable.

Join us for DRI2022 in Las Vegas Feb. 13-16, 2022, where Future Vision Committee Chair Lyndon Bird will lead an interactive session where participants will have the opportunity to vote on a number of the key issues which have emerged from the reports. Bird will respond to voting as it happens, providing instant feedback and opinion. Please come to this session ready to participate, debate, and even argue if you wish. Challenging and controversial opinions are welcome.
