They were briefing on what to expect in the way of damages following a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, which would impact British Columbia and extend down the coasts of Washington and Oregon to Northern California.
What impressed me was the level of detail planning that is being done. Certainly it is not perfect, but miles ahead of what we’ve had in the past. What I really appreciate is that we will now have a basic concept of operations that we will deviate from at the time of the incident because what was planned for, the assumptions, etc., will be proven all wrong — but, we have a basic plan.
I also heard the recognition of the difficulties that are going to be faced in responding to this regional/multi-state disaster. I think the planned inflow of people and resources was way too optimistic, but ... we have a plan!
