Surging COVID Cases Hitting Hospitals and States Spared in the Past

It is not the return to normal that people want.

The fat lady has yet to sing when it comes to the pandemic. It isn’t over until it is over, and it won’t be over for many months to come — or, such time that we have the vast majority of people vaccinated or infected with the virus.

It would appear that the majority of the American population is acting as though the worst of the pandemic is behind us and we are pretty much back to normal — at least that is how they are behaving anyway.

Today we finished decorating our Christmas tree, which last year we didn’t even put up, since no one was coming over. We visited one family outside on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day our son and family came over and we sat in the garage with the doors open. Merry Christmas! We did pull the cars out.

The recent surge in cases that I wrote about is showing up in hospitals at a rate that some states have never seen in the first two years of the pandemic. See this article on how the state of Maine is being impacted: “Maine Hospitals Ration Care for First Time as COVID Worsens.”

Many millions of people are quitting their jobs. In October there were another 4 million who quit their job. I’m beginning to wonder how many of those people leaving a job are in health care.

The sustained effort they have been called upon to sustain is unsustainable.
