2022 Predictions: Nationalism on the Rise?

January 13, 2022 Leave a comment DRI Admin

The DRI International Future Vision Committee has released its 7th Annual Predictions Report, looking ahead to 2022 and its impact on the resilience community. Download the complete report free from the DRI Library, and read on for a prediction on the threat of nationalism.

Prediction 4: Nationalism and ethnic conflict intensify

A more difficult economic and social environment will push the trend towards nationalism and ethnic tensions. Those favoring such developments now have a vast array of sophisticated cyber and other tools to support their efforts to undermine democracy.

Tensions between NATO and Russia will remain high over the situations in Ukraine and Bosnia/Serbia, with continuing low-level conflict. Russia will make full use of the non-lethal levers at its disposal to put pressure on its European neighbors. These will include restricting gas supplies, weaponizing immigrant flows from the Middle East through Belarus, and fake news campaigns to undermine NATO.

There will be continuing tension in the U.S.-China relationship, exacerbated by regional U.S. alliances (Australia, Japan, India etc.). Taiwan and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea will remain particular flashpoints. China will continue to press militarily against India.

Join us for DRI2022 in Las Vegas Feb. 13-16, 2022, where Future Vision Committee Chair Lyndon Bird will lead an interactive session where participants will have the opportunity to vote on a number of the key issues which have emerged from the reports. Bird will respond to voting as it happens, providing instant feedback and opinion. Please come to this session ready to participate, debate, and even argue if you wish. Challenging and controversial opinions are welcome.
