Disaster Zone Podcast: Hurricane Andrew 30 Years Later

Before there was Hurricane Katrina there was Hurricane Andrew.

Hurricane Katrina caused a seismic change in emergency management in general and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in particular. Before that it was Hurricane Andrew that impacted the emergency management system and how we functioned.

August 24th is the 30th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew that struck Florida and Dade County in 1992. While it may seem like it was eons ago, we can learn from those experiences that included catastrophic damages.

This Disaster Zone Podcast: Hurricane Andrew 30 Years Later is with Kate Hale, the then Dade County Emergency Management Director. She lived the experience, including being "electrocuted" in the aftermath.

With that as a tease, be sure and take time to listen to this podcast. I'm sure you will learn something that you can apply personally and within your programs.
Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
