Pure Storage is pleased to announce that we’ve recently completed our first materiality assessment. Conducted by a third-party, this assessment helps identify our key priority areas at the intersection of stakeholder engagement and business success.

In the realm of sustainability, a materiality assessment is a formal exercise to engage stakeholders and find out how important specific environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues are to them. More than 80% of the world’s largest 250 companies already identify material sustainability issues in their reporting.

While a materiality assessment is often considered the first step in a company’s ESG journey, in reality, we’ve been working on these priorities for some time. Many of these priorities are already embedded into our core values and business strategy. This is great news, as it means we already have the right teams, individuals, and strategies ingrained in our daily work.

Our key priority areas are, in no particular order:

  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging
  • Talent Recruitment, Retention, and Development
  • Ethical Business Practices
  • Data Security and Privacy

Where to now, then? By identifying these key priorities, we’re able to keep our programs streamlined and focused on the priorities that matter most to our stakeholders. Now, we can dig into doing even more to move the needle forward.

How Is Pure Promoting ESG?

Energy and Climate Change

We’ve recently embarked on a carbon footprint analysis of Pure as a company (Scopes 1, 2, and 3), as well as on our product (LCA). We can use this baseline to create future-looking carbon emissions goals and provide our customers with the data they need to calculate and reduce their own carbon footprints.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIBS)

We recently hired a head of DIBS, who is helping us to further build diversity, inclusion, and belonging into all of our business units. In addition, we have several active ERGs and affinity groups that allow us to build community, get critical feedback, and provide a sense of belonging to Pure employees and partners.

Additionally, our Pure Good Foundation granted over $1M last year to non-profits that are partnering with us to solve this issue. We’re also bringing on interns from these organizations.

Talent Recruitment, Retention, and Development

There’s a reason our NPS score is 83.5 and that reason is our talent. Recruiting and retaining the best talent in the industry is at the heart of what we do. Talent develops our innovative products, creates our compelling brand and marketing strategy, and gets out in the field to work with customers to provide the best possible solution and follow up with them to ensure success.

We aim to hire and retain that talent by providing ample benefits, growth opportunities, and a culture of balance and hustle. We’ve been certified as a Great Place to Work and named one of Fortune’s Best Large Workplaces in the Bay Area and Best Workplaces in Technology in 2020.

ESG and Ethical Business Practices

Pure has always been committed to doing business ethically. We’ve committed to the RBA Code of Conduct and ask our suppliers to do the same. We take a number of steps to ensure our employees and partners operate ethically, including:

  • All employees certify annually that they agree to abide by Pure’s Code of Conduct and other key policies.
  • All employees are offered a variety of ethics and compliance training at onboarding and again annually.
  • Maintaining a hotline for reporting. Pure actively encourages a dialogue between employees and the company on these topics, including, among other things, maintaining a hotline for people to come forward with concerns.
  • Conducting prompt and thorough investigations and remediation of reported misconduct.
  • Conducting due diligence on business partners, with a standalone Partner Code of Conduct that all business partners must follow as a condition of participating in Pure’s Partner Program.

Data Security and Privacy

While Pure doesn’t retain sensitive customer data, our customers do. Building products that enable the highest level of security for our customers is paramount to what we do. We continue to provide transparency on these issues and have put into place policies and practices that keep data secure.
