A key part of this essay deals with the one thing we have so little of right now – trust. Whether Dem or GOPer, all can agree that trust in our institutions is at a lower ebb than any time since WWII. As I pointed out in a previous comment, the CDC’s communications have been particularly unfortunate – starting out mostly trusted, but now – leaving too many mostly disgusted.
A new example just popped up in my newsfeed this AM. After two years(!), the CDC is starting to tell people that obesity increases your chances for a bad spell of covid. Who would’ve thunk it? Maybe now, they’ll think to issue guidelines that emphasize the importance of exercise. Well, maybe they will…
The best preparation any of us can make for a future pandemic is to transition to a healthier lifestyle. The best preparation our country’s leaders can make for a future pandemic is to restore trust in our institutions and in our leaders. Until that’s accomplished, the best we can hope for is that we muddle through whatever comes next.
