The Current Landscape of Cybersecurity and Its Effects on the Security Industry

Thursday, March 24, 10:00-11:00 a.m.

There are roughly 35.8 billion Internet of Thing (IoT) devices worldwide, and that number is expected to double in the next five years. While IoT devices have been subject to several high-profile DDoS attacks, such as the Mirai botnet 2016, the primary question that arises is whether these devices can be weaponized and possibly used for lateral movement, based on basic open source intelligence (OSINT). This session will review the OSINT gathering.

Attendees will learn how basic information can lead to threats to existing systems and what to investigate before adding any new security technology to a network.

Here’s a teaser from speaker David Brent:

Real-World Cybersecurity for Secure Installations

Thursday, March 24, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

This session will cover cybersecurity concerns related to video surveillance and access control installations and ways to help mitigate them. There are several cybersecurity frameworks, policies and guidelines that have been published but can be difficult to translate into field installation practices and policies.

“Cybersecurity has been a central topic at every industry show for the last few years, but it is a difficult for a lot of integrators to digest and develop installation policies. The cybersecurity threat landscape is evolving every day, and we owe it to our customers to deliver the most secure installation we can.”

Jim Cooper, vice president of technology, Integrated Security & Communications

The session will offer a high-level review of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s cybersecurity framework, CIS controls, COBIT and IoTSF and discuss creating actionable tasks for the major sections to help provide a more secure installation for our end users, including password use and management, device firmware patching, server patching, network security configurations, monitoring of overall data flow and information to be passed back to a customer information security team.

Speaker:

  • Jim Cooper, vice president of technology, Integrated Security & Communications

How to Select a Security Integration Company With Cybersecurity in Mind

Thursday, March 24, 1:00-2:00 p.m.

What should you expect from your physical security integrator? In today’s virtual world, physical security integrators should be professionals with high competency in physical, cyber and information security. End users should identify integration companies that are installing, supporting and operating their security solutions with a cyber-secure approach.

“The security integration company you select typically installs more IoT devices on your network than your in-house or contracted IT department. Why wouldn’t you vet their cybersecurity maturity with the same fastidiousness as your IT and software providers?”

Gary Hoffner, vice president, PSLA Security

In this panel discussion, industry experts will share the resources and skill sets end users should be looking for when selecting a security company that has cybersecurity front of mind.

“Physical security systems are a door to your network. How do you ensure the person installing your system closes and locks that door when they leave? Come to this session to learn about just that. It’s important to evaluate your provider not only on how well they can deploy the technology, but also on how they secure it as well as themselves against attack.”

Josh Cummings, vice president, technology, VTI Security

Speakers:

  • Jim Cooper, vice president of technology, Integrated Security & Communications
  • Josh Cummings, vice president, technology, VTI Security
  • Gary Hoffner, vice president, PSLA Security
  • Chris Peckham, chief operating officer, Ollivier Corporation

Vetting Technology Partners Based on Cybersecurity Hardness

Tuesday, March 22, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

An important consideration when selecting and vetting technology partners is cybersecurity. Systems integrators and end users need assurance that their information, systems and networks are not put at risk when they connect and do business with technology partners. Cybersecurity can be a key differentiator when selecting the right technology partners and manufacturers.

“Think all IP cameras are the same? How about card readers? Cyber hygiene is a critical component to technology selection. Performance is not just about how well the device works; it’s also about how secure that device is that you are connecting to your network.  This session will help you avoid leaving the ‘door’ open on your security systems.”

Josh Cummings, vice president, technology, VTI Security

In this panel discussion, industry experts will discuss the important cybersecurity hardness fundamentals technology partners should be implementing.

Speakers:

  • Jim Cooper, vice president of technology, Integrated Security & Communications
  • Josh Cummings, vice president, technology, VTI Security
  • Gary Hoffner, vice president, PSLA Security
  • Chris Peckham, chief operating officer, Ollivier Corporation
