Good Grief: Candy Corn Maker Hacked in Time for Halloween

October 28, 2021 Leave a comment DRI Admin

Typically this is the time of year where we all get together to argue over whether candy corn is tasty or disgusting, but for this Halloween we also have to wonder if it’s cyber resilient.

A ransomware group successfully hacked Chicago-based Ferrara Candy, the world’s largest manufacturer of the Halloween seasonal favorite (for some) candy corn — encrypting some of its systems.

Though early shipping of its candy (which also includes Sweet Tarts, Nerds and gummi worms) means the shelves are fully stocked and there’s plenty available for trick-or-treaters, the company is says it has resumed production in certain facilities and they’re working with law enforcement to track down the cyber criminals.

The motive of the crime will remain unsolved for now, but – just speculating – maybe they wanted to stop production of these objectively gross-sounding Turkey Dinner flavored candy corns.
