Security Industry Association Forms Counter-UAS Working Group

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has established a Counter-UAS Working Group, which held its initial meeting during ISC West 2023. The group is chaired by Bill Edwards, president of federal and public safety at Building Intelligence, Inc.

Event venues are limited in their ability to establish counter-uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) given the myriad of regulatory nuances and lack of a clear national framework for addressing the topic. The Biden administration has published a plan to address this concern, the Domestic Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems National Action Plan. The SIA Counter-UAS Working Group was created to actively support the work needed to accomplish the recommendations of the national action plan and further educate and give authorities options to mitigate UAS attacks.

“We must bring industry experts together to address counter uncrewed aerial system training, certification and legislative authorities that will extend beyond government and include large gatherings in the public sector,” said Counter-UAS Working Group Chair Bill Edwards. “The evolution and maturity of commercial drone technology demand this attention.”

This group will collaborate with external organizations and recruit industry experts aligned with this goal; track and monitor supportive legislation; and identify, educate and engage legislators.
