SIA Standards Update From ISC West 2024

Adom Yusuf shares 8 key updates on SIA’s standards programs coming out of ISC West, held April 9-12 in Las Vegas.

The SIA Standards team is celebrating an amazing week in Las Vegas! With the ISC West energy still lingering, I’m eager to spotlight key discussions from many standards-related gatherings. If any of these concepts resonate with you, please don’t hesitate to reach out and be part of the conversation.

• SIA Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP): The SIA OSDP Technical Subcommittee met at ISC West before The Interface, a tech-forward social event hosted by SIA and sponsored by Cypress Integration Solutions, i-PRO, Paige Datacom Solutions and Pelican Zero, where OSDP was also presented. The subcomittee, under the co-leadership of Steve Rogers and Tony Diodato, is actively advancing OSDP development. Plans are underway to create a personal identity verification alignment document, coordinate ongoing efforts among companies and finalize the OSDP Verified recertification process using GitHub resources. Additionally, the OSDP version 2.2.1 release is in the works, while the subcommittee is gearing up for ISC East participation and is charting a road map for version 2.3.
• Perimeter Security: SIA Perimeter Security Subcommittee Chair Robert Reiter kicked off the latest meeting with key updates. We welcomed new co-chairs, Christa Decker and Amy Dunton, marking a dynamic leadership shift. Matt Morgan from Protogetic shared insights into evolving consumer behavior, emphasizing the growing demand for tailored solutions and the need for enhanced education and support for end users. The Temporary Barrier Working Group discussed plans to transition the temporary barrier document from a white paper to an information guide. The Installation, Repair and Maintenance Guideline Working Group is refining its draft, with further meetings to address different barrier types. Significant strides were made in the Perimeter Security Terminology Group, with revisions completed and focus shifting to nonstandard elements.
• Intrusion and Alarm: The SIA Intrusion Subcommittee, led by Chair Boris Stern, convened for its annual in-person meeting focused on key alarm industry issues. Mr. Stern initiated discussions on alarm system classification, presenting the subcommittee with detailed insight. Considerations were raised regarding the practical application of this classification data, with suggestions including its transformation into a white paper format. The committee aims to streamline classification levels, recognizing the current abundance. The goal is to develop a comprehensive framework addressing both residential and commercial needs.
• Video and Vision: The SIA Video and Vision Subcommittee, chaired by Brian Karas, convened to address ongoing matters and review outstanding topics. The subcommittee led discussions to establish the committee’s key priorities for 2024. Members are actively exploring ways to enhance communication channels beyond the SIA newsletter. This includes drafting a position paper to tackle community challenges and propose actionable solutions. Initial steps involve outlining challenging scenarios to guide the paper’s focus.
• Audio and Intelligent Communications: The SIA Audio and Intelligent Communications Subcommittee, under the leadership of Derek Van der Vorst, convened and delved deeper into the recent ONVIF meeting, particularly focusing on prioritizing agenda items resulting from the discussions. Members were urged to contribute any existing standards relevant to their objectives and offer suggestions for future initiatives. Notably, the committee is actively seeking individuals with expertise in audio as a primary focus to enrich our ongoing efforts.
• Cybersecurity Advisory Board: The SIA Cybersecurity Advisory Board, chaired by Wayne Dorris, discussed ongoing matters and outlined priorities for 2024. Members seek insights from government relations on upcoming regulations. They proposed a “Cyber Topic of the Quarter” to boost visibility and plan to explore podcasts and webinars for sharing insights. A possible initiative includes a collaboration for a cybersecurity e-learning course. Working groups will focus on device management and engagement with manufacturers. They aim to create a road map for cybersecurity recommendations, shared via webinars and podcasts.
• AG-01: The Architectural Graphics Working Group led by Chair Larry Fosnight is embarking on a comprehensive update of the AG-01 standard. Objectives include modernizing representations of security devices on architectural drawings, adapting AG-01 to contemporary software and establishing an industry standard for depicting security technology devices. The next steps involve creating a collaboration form for symbol list cleanup, designating subject matter experts for each symbol category, engaging industry partners for contribution and planning and assigning tasks for updating AG-01.
• Built Environment Advisory Board: Dan Cremins of Delta Electronics has been appointed as the new chair of SIA’s Built Environment Advisory Board. Formerly known as the Proptech Advisory Board, this advisory board serves to enhance engagement between the proptech community and the global security industry through partnerships and education. The group gathered at ISC West, discussing key built environment concepts, objectives and future meeting and event plans. Key Built Environment Advisory Board efforts include publishing the SIA Proptech Report and assessing proptech trends and market interests in security solutions for commercial real estate. The board will also work to produce informative blogs and videos on proptech security topics. Regular in-person meetings are held at ISC West and East, with monthly virtual meetings scheduled.
