2022 Predictions: How Bad Will Flooding Get?

January 11, 2022 Leave a comment DRI Admin

The DRI International Future Vision Committee has released its 7th Annual Predictions Report, looking ahead to 2022 and its impact on the resilience community. Download the complete report free from the DRI Library, and read on for a prediction on increasing flood danger.

Prediction 2: Flooding and coastal erosion at a rate we have not previously experienced

Rising global temperatures will coincide with more extreme weather. The most vulnerable countries (islands or those with low-lying areas) will suffer from greater flooding and coastal erosion at a rapidly increasing rate.

Problems will increase in the South Pacific as tropical patterns shift further south. La Niña will be present in southern oceans, so flooding is even more likely. Higher rainfalls are expected in Australia and South East Asia and will drive forest growth, leading to a significant bushfire threat in late 2022.

Insurance costs will rise, and insurers will continue pressing governments to take more of the risk.

Join us for DRI2022 in Las Vegas Feb. 13-16, 2022, where Future Vision Committee Chair Lyndon Bird will lead an interactive session where participants will have the opportunity to vote on a number of the key issues which have emerged from the reports. Bird will respond to voting as it happens, providing instant feedback and opinion. Please come to this session ready to participate, debate, and even argue if you wish. Challenging and controversial opinions are welcome.
