New Security Industry Association (SIA) member HavenLock provides military-grade strength smart door locks and lockdown systems for homes, schools and businesses. The company is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.

SIA spoke with HavenLock CEO Alex Bertelli about the company, the security industry and working with SIA.

Tell us the story of your company.

Alex Bertelli: HavenLock was founded in 2014 after a break-in occurred in my neighborhood. I decided to take action and develop a locking system that was the strongest, most integrated device for home use. After the 2018 tragedy in Parkland, Florida, the company focused its efforts on the commercial school security market to tackle the growing active shooter problem.

What solutions/services does your business offer in the security industry? And what makes your offerings or your company unique?

AB: HavenLock’s main product is Haven Lockdown – the strongest, most advanced locking system that universally fits a commercial door most commonly found on the interior of buildings. It prevents, detects and notifies of an active threat intrusion into a room allowing the occupants to remain safe, while directing first responders to the location of the incident using smart sensor technology.

What is something we might not know about your company – or something new you are doing in security?

AB: Our company uses a patented wedge technology that is stronger than most commercial locks. The unique combination of materials coupled with sustainable power footprint makes it one of the most versatile locks in the industry. Founded by special operations veterans, HavenLock was built with years of experience in combat from lessons learned fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Additionally, we recently launched the HAVEN Guardian Angel Program, which allows customers to “buy a lock, give a lock.” Through this program, when a business buys a lock, we give them one for free to donate to a school or day care of their choice, meaning they can protect their facility and also help protect their community.

What is your company’s vision, and what are your goals for the security industry?

AB: Our vision is to protect people at work, home, church and school to provide them peace of mind to live their lives without fear.

What do you think are the biggest opportunities in the security industry right now?

AB: The security market in the locking space hasn’t changed much in the past 30 years. Magnetic locks and strikes require several costly accessories that drive labor and install costs up. HavenLock installs in one-third of the time at one-third of the cost and has more sensors and advanced features than any comparable device in the marketplace.

What are your predictions for the security industry in the short and long term?

AB: The security industry is going to rely more on Internet of Things devices to increase security and allow for occupant ease of us, while maintain a sustainable footprint in a facility. Devices that require a bigger footprint to install, run and service will dissipate as advancements in technology improve over time.

What do you enjoy most about being at your company – and in the security industry?

AB: We focus on a difficult task that will solve real problems for how humans interact with their environments outside the home. People shouldn’t have to live their lives in fear when they leave the house. Our company is built on the sole purpose of protecting people and giving them peace of mind to live their lives. That is what motivates us every day.

What does SIA offer that is most important to you/your company? And what do you most hope to get out of your membership with SIA?

AB: SIA offers a unique capability for companies to have a voice in the industry. SIA also has done a great job advocating for legistlation and improvements in how our industry is view by public and private organizations who could benefit from technology enhancements.
