The recently published 2021 edition of NFPA US Experience with Sprinklers report shows, that properties with sprinklers have lower rates of fire deaths and injuries. From 2015 to 2019, local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 51,000 structure fires per year (10 percent) in which sprinklers were present.

In 2015 Gaillard and Gomez published an interesting paper on the "disaster research gold rush". A positive side of the urge to publish is the desire to contribute to the debate before it lapses because attention is diverted to other issues. Gomez 2015. As I write, the Covid-19 pandemic is ramping up in many countries.

This reminded me that perhaps 70 per cent of academic publishing is for personnel reasons (to get a job, keep a job, obtain a salary raise, or achieve promotion). I cleave to the old-fashioned view that publishing should take place to further the sharing of good ideas. Gomez 2015. This also exists outside the academic field.

Even when the American Lawyer, Michael Garcia, produced a report on the corruption within FIFA it was never published and the executive summary he claimed didn’t summarise the report and had been substantially altered.
